Switzerland
FIFA #15
Qualifies for every tournament, exits politely in the knockouts, and is never anyone's favorite but never really embarrasses themselves either. Football's neutral territory — reliable, disciplined, somehow always fine.
📍 In the US
Staged out of the New York area, which is a spiritually obvious home for a nation that hosts international organizations and prides itself on neutral competence. The UN Secretariat is just across the river and the Swiss contingent has already drafted a detailed hotel protocol document.
Style
Compact and disciplined, winning the ball back quickly and using swift transitions to exploit space before the opposition can reset.
Rivals
France. Switzerland's 2021 shootout win over France in the Euros was celebrated with an intensity that surprised even the Swiss — France still haven't fully processed it.
Home Base
A country that stayed neutral through two world wars has not extended that courtesy to football. Geneva and Zurich have hosted international fixtures since football was a Victorian novelty, and the Swiss have a quiet tradition of overperforming their ranking at tournaments — which makes them permanently difficult to write off.
